Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial (PERKESO) or Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) was established in 1971 under the Ministry of Human Resources (formerly known as Ministry of Labour) with the aim to administer, enforce and implement the Employees’ Social Security Act, 1969 thus benefitting employees under the Employment Injury Insurance Scheme and the Disability Pension Scheme. Under these schemes, employees are given coverage against job-related injury and disability,workplace accidents, occupational diseases and death.
Among the many functions undertaken by SOCSO is registering employer/employees, collection of employers/employee contributions, processing and disbursing claims made by salaried employees and their dependants. In addition SOCSO also provides physical and vocational rehabilitation benefits to claimants and promotes occupational safety and health awareness. In July 1985, SOCSO’s status changed from that of a government department to that of a statutory body. On 1 January 1992, SOCSO implemented its own renumeration scheme, SOCSO New Renumeration Scheme (SSBP).
